Instead of manually converting measurements and dividing the total volume by truck capacity, you can enter your project information and receive an estimate of the required number of trucks.
This calculator also goes beyond truck quantity. It considers:

How to Use the Concrete Truck Calculator
Using the calculator involves several simple steps.
Step 1: Choose Your Volume Input Method
The calculator provides three ways to determine the required concrete volume:

- Calculate from area and thickness
Choose the method that matches the information you already have.
If a contractor or supplier has already told you that your project requires a certain number of cubic yards, entering the cubic-yard amount directly is the quickest option.
If you know the length, width, and thickness of the concrete area, you can use the dimensions option.
For projects where you already know the total square footage, the area and thickness option can be more convenient.
Step 2: Enter Your Project Volume
If you select Cubic Yards, enter the estimated volume directly.
If you select Dimensions, enter:
- Length in feet
- Width in feet
- Thickness in inches
The calculator converts these measurements into cubic yards.
For the Area & Thickness option, enter:
- Area in square feet

Step 3: Select Truck Capacity
Choose the truck size you expect to use.
The calculator includes these capacity options:
- Mini Mixer — 6 cubic yards
- Small Truck — 8 cubic yards
- Standard Truck — 10 cubic yards
- Large Truck — 12 cubic yards
Truck capacity is important because it directly affects the number of loads required.
A larger-capacity truck may carry more concrete per trip, while a smaller truck may be useful when access or project requirements limit the load size.
Step 4: Select the Concrete Mix
The calculator includes several concrete mix options with built-in example prices:
- Economy Mix — 2500 PSI
- Standard Mix — 3000 PSI
- Premium Mix — 3500 PSI
- High-Strength — 4000 PSI
- Fiber-Reinforced — 3000 PSI
- High-Performance — 5000 PSI
The selected mix price is used to estimate the material cost.
Keep in mind that concrete specifications should be selected according to your project’s structural and construction requirements rather than price alone. For structural work, follow the specifications provided by your engineer, contractor, building plans, or local requirements.
Step 5: Enter Delivery Distance
Enter the approximate distance from the concrete supplier to the project site in miles.
The calculator uses a base delivery fee and adds a distance-based charge when the entered distance exceeds 15 miles.
Actual ready-mix suppliers may use different delivery zones, mileage rates, minimum charges, or other pricing structures, so use the result as an estimate.
Step 6: Enter Estimated Pour Time
Enter the estimated time required for the concrete pour.
The calculator uses 90 minutes as the included pour-time threshold. When the estimated pour time exceeds 90 minutes, an overtime charge is calculated in 15-minute increments.
Accurately estimating the pour time can therefore help produce a more realistic project-cost estimate.
Step 7: Select Additional Services
The calculator includes optional additional services such as:
- None
- Short Load Fee
- Saturday Delivery
- Sunday/Holiday Delivery
- Rush Delivery
These options can add to the estimated project cost.
There is also an automatic short-load consideration when the calculated concrete quantity is below 4 cubic yards.
Step 8: Add a Waste Buffer
Concrete projects often include a small allowance for waste, measurement differences, uneven surfaces, spillage, and other practical factors.
The calculator allows a waste buffer of up to 30%.
The default value is 5%.
For example, if the calculated project volume is 20 cubic yards and you add a 5% waste allowance:
20 × 1.05 = 21 cubic yards
The calculator uses the adjusted volume when determining truck requirements and estimated material cost.
How the Concrete Volume Is Calculated
When using dimensions, the calculator first converts thickness from inches to feet.
The basic calculation is:
Volume in cubic feet = Length × Width × Thickness in feet
Since one cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet:
Cubic yards = Cubic feet ÷ 27
For example, suppose a rectangular slab is:
- 30 feet long
- 20 feet wide
- 4 inches thick
Four inches equals one-third of a foot.
Therefore:
30 × 20 × 0.3333 ≈ 200 cubic feet
Then:
200 ÷ 27 ≈ 7.41 cubic yards
With a 5% waste allowance:
7.41 × 1.05 ≈ 7.78 cubic yards
The calculator would use approximately 7.78 cubic yards for the subsequent truck and cost calculations.
Example: Estimating Concrete Trucks
Suppose your project requires approximately 18 cubic yards of concrete after accounting for the selected waste allowance.
If you select a standard 10-yard truck:
18 ÷ 10 = 1.8
Because you cannot order 1.8 trucks, the calculator rounds up to the next whole truck.
That means:
2 trucks are required.
The first truck can carry up to 10 cubic yards, while the remaining load would be approximately 8 cubic yards.
If the project required exactly 20 cubic yards with a 10-yard truck, the calculation would result in two full truckloads.
Understanding the Last Truck Load
The calculator also estimates the amount of concrete required for the final truck.
This is useful because the final truck may not be completely full.
For example, if the adjusted requirement is 23 cubic yards and each truck carries 10 cubic yards:
- Truck 1: 10 yd³
- Truck 2: 10 yd³
- Truck 3: 3 yd³
The last truck load is therefore approximately 3 cubic yards.
This information can help you understand why the total number of trucks can increase even when the final truck is only partially loaded.
Understanding Concrete Weight
The calculator estimates concrete weight using approximately 4,050 pounds per cubic yard.
For example, at 10 cubic yards:
10 × 4,050 = 40,500 pounds
The result is also converted into tons by dividing the estimated weight in pounds by 2,000.
This is an important planning figure, particularly for transportation and job-site logistics.
However, actual concrete density can vary depending on the mix, aggregate, moisture, and other material characteristics. The calculator’s weight result should therefore be treated as an estimate rather than a certified truck weight.
Understanding Concrete Cost
The estimated concrete material cost is calculated from the adjusted volume and selected mix price.
The basic calculation is:
Concrete Cost = Adjusted Volume × Price Per Cubic Yard
For example, if the adjusted requirement is 10 cubic yards and the selected mix has an example price of $125 per cubic yard:
10 × $125 = $1,250
This represents the estimated concrete material cost before delivery, overtime, and additional charges.
Understanding Delivery Fees
The calculator starts with a base delivery fee of $60.
For delivery distances beyond 15 miles, it adds $3 for each additional mile.
For example, at 20 miles:
20 − 15 = 5 additional miles
5 × $3 = $15
Adding the $60 base fee gives:
$75 estimated delivery fee
Actual supplier charges may differ, so confirm delivery pricing with your local concrete company before ordering.
Understanding Overtime Charges
The calculator considers 90 minutes as the included estimated pour time.
If your estimated pour takes longer than 90 minutes, the calculator adds $15 for each additional 15-minute increment.
For example, a 120-minute pour is 30 minutes beyond the included 90 minutes:
30 ÷ 15 = 2 increments
2 × $15 = $30
This provides an estimate of potential overtime charges based on the calculator’s built-in assumptions.
What the Final Results Mean
After you click Calculate, the tool displays several useful results.
Trucks Required shows the number of concrete trucks needed after the waste allowance is included.
Total Concrete Volume shows the adjusted amount of concrete in cubic yards.
