How Concrete Volume Is Calculated

Concrete is commonly ordered by the cubic yard, while construction dimensions are often measured in feet and inches. The calculator automatically handles these unit conversions.

For a rectangular area, the basic area calculation is:

Area = Length × Width

Because thickness is entered in inches, it is converted to feet by dividing it by 12. Volume in cubic feet can then be found by multiplying surface area by thickness in feet.

There are 27 cubic feet in one cubic yard. Therefore:

Cubic yards = Cubic feet ÷ 27

For circular projects, the calculator determines the area from the diameter using the circle area formula. That area is then multiplied by the concrete thickness and converted to cubic yards.

Suppose you are building a rectangular concrete patio that measures 20 feet long and 12 feet wide, with a thickness of 4 inches.

The area is:

20 × 12 = 240 square feet

A 4-inch thickness equals approximately 0.333 feet. Therefore, the volume is approximately:

240 × 0.333 = 80 cubic feet

Converting that volume to cubic yards gives approximately:

80 ÷ 27 = 2.96 cubic yards

Why Add a Concrete Waste Factor?

Project dimensions rarely translate perfectly into the exact amount of concrete that will be used on site. Excavation depths may vary, forms may not be perfectly uniform, and small amounts of concrete can be lost during transportation, placement, or finishing.

A waste factor provides additional material above the theoretical volume.

The appropriate allowance depends on site conditions and the project. A 10% allowance is a useful general starting point, which is why the calculator uses 10% by default. A straightforward project with precise forms may require less contingency, while an irregular or difficult excavation could require more.

How Thickness Affects Concrete Requirements

Thickness has a direct impact on the amount of concrete required. If the area remains the same, increasing the thickness increases the concrete volume proportionally.

For example, a 6-inch slab needs 50% more concrete by volume than a 4-inch slab covering the same area.
