How Concrete Foundation Volume Is Calculated
Concrete is commonly ordered in cubic yards. The calculator first determines volume in cubic feet and then converts it to cubic yards.
One cubic yard contains:
27 cubic feet
Therefore:
Cubic Yards = Cubic Feet ÷ 27
Because Wall Thickness is entered in inches, it is first converted to feet:
Thickness in Feet = Thickness in Inches ÷ 12

Concrete Slab Calculation
For Slab mode, the calculator first determines the footprint:

Concrete Foundation Wall Calculation
Perimeter Walls mode first calculates the perimeter of the rectangular foundation:
Perimeter = 2 × (Length + Width)
Wall surface area is:
Wall Area = Perimeter × Wall Height
Wall volume is then:
Wall Volume = Perimeter × Wall Height × Wall Thickness in Feet
For example, consider a 30-foot by 20-foot foundation with 8-foot-high walls.
Its perimeter is:
2 × (30 + 20) = 100 feet
The wall area is:
100 × 8 = 800 square feet
If the wall is 8 inches thick, that thickness is approximately 0.667 feet. The wall volume is therefore approximately:

How the Footing Calculator Works
The Footings option uses assumptions based on the Wall Thickness input rather than asking separately for footing width and footing depth.
Footing width = 2 × Wall Thickness
Footing depth = Wall Thickness
For an 8-inch wall thickness, for example, the calculator assumes a footing approximately 16 inches wide and 8 inches deep.
The footing runs continuously around the entire calculated perimeter.
This is a mathematical assumption built into this particular estimator, not a recommendation for footing dimensions. Real footing size depends on building loads, soil capacity, frost conditions, local requirements, and engineered or approved construction plans.
If the footing dimensions specified for your project differ from these assumptions, this calculator's footing result will not represent those plans.
Full Foundation Concrete Estimate
The Full Foundation option combines the perimeter wall and continuous footing quantities:
Total Volume = Wall Volume + Footing Volume
For the wall portion, the entered Wall Height and Wall Thickness are used.
For the footing portion, the assumed width is twice the wall thickness and the assumed depth equals the wall thickness.
The Full Foundation option does not add a floor slab. If your project requires walls, footings, and a slab, the slab quantity should be calculated separately and then added to the foundation quantity.
Concrete Foundation Calculator Example
Consider a rectangular foundation measuring 24 feet by 16 feet with an 8-foot wall height and an 8-inch wall thickness.
The perimeter is:
2 × (24 + 16) = 80 feet
Eight inches equals approximately 0.667 feet.
The wall volume is:
80 × 8 × 0.667 ≈ 426.67 cubic feet

A theoretical calculation assumes that forms and excavations match the specified dimensions exactly. Actual construction can vary.
Excavations can be wider or deeper in places, forms can vary slightly, and some concrete may be lost during handling and placement.
The calculator starts with a 10% waste factor. For example, if a foundation theoretically requires 10 cubic yards:
10 × 1.10 = 11 cubic yards
The appropriate ordering allowance depends on project conditions. For large foundation pours, confirm the required quantity with the contractor and ready-mix supplier.
How to Estimate Foundation Concrete Cost
The calculator uses your Price per Cubic Yard to estimate concrete material cost after adding waste:
Total Cost = Cubic Yards With Waste × Price per Cubic Yard
For example, if the waste-adjusted requirement is 12 cubic yards and concrete costs $180 per cubic yard:
12 × $180 = $2,160
This figure is not a complete foundation construction estimate. It does not separately add excavation, forms, reinforcement, labor, gravel, waterproofing, drainage, pumping, delivery, taxes, insulation, finishing, or other project expenses.

Full foundations can require hundreds of bags, making ready-mix concrete more practical for many foundation projects.
Understanding the Wall Area Result
The meaning of the displayed area varies with the selected foundation type.
For Slab mode, it represents the slab's length-by-width surface area.
For Perimeter Walls and Full Foundation modes, it represents perimeter multiplied by wall height.
For Footings mode, the area result is perimeter multiplied by the entered wall thickness in feet. Because this is a calculator-specific output, it should not be confused with footing plan area when comparing quantities with construction drawings.
