Concrete is commonly ordered by cubic yard. One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet.
For a rectangular slab, first calculate the area:
Area = Length × Width
Since thickness is entered in inches, convert it to feet:
Thickness in feet = Thickness in inches ÷ 12
Next, find the volume:
Cubic feet = Area × Thickness in feet
Then convert cubic feet into cubic yards:
Cubic yards = Cubic feet ÷ 27

Concrete Calculator Example
Assume you need a rectangular concrete slab measuring 18 feet long, 12 feet wide, and 4 inches thick.

Concrete Calculator for Rectangular and Square Slabs
The Rectangle/Square option works for many common concrete projects, including patios, floors, sidewalks, shed bases, driveway sections and equipment pads.
For example, a 10-foot by 15-foot rectangular slab has an area of:
10 × 15 = 150 square feet
If you have a square that measures 12 feet on each side, enter 12 for both length and width.
For an irregular layout composed of multiple rectangular sections, calculate each section separately and then add the concrete quantities together.
Concrete Calculator for Circular Slabs
Choose Circle when estimating a round concrete slab or pad. The calculator treats the Length measurement as the circle's diameter.
If a circle has a diameter of 10 feet, its radius is:
10 ÷ 2 = 5 feet
The area is then calculated as:
Area = π × Radius²
For this example:
3.1416 × 5² ≈ 78.54 square feet
That area is multiplied by the concrete thickness to determine volume.
Remember to enter a positive value in the Width field as well. It is required by the tool even though it is not part of the circular area calculation.
Concrete Calculator for Triangular Areas
Triangular concrete areas can be calculated by selecting Triangle. For this mode, Length functions as the base and Width functions as the perpendicular height.
The formula is:
Area = (Length × Width) ÷ 2
For example, if the base is 14 feet and the perpendicular height is 8 feet:
(14 × 8) ÷ 2 = 56 square feet
The concrete volume is then determined using your entered thickness.
The height should be measured perpendicular to the base. A diagonal side measurement should not be substituted for the perpendicular height.
Why Add a Concrete Waste Factor?
A concrete calculation based strictly on ideal dimensions may not perfectly represent the amount used on the job site.
The prepared ground can have small high and low areas. Excavations may be deeper in places, forms may vary slightly from planned measurements, and some material may be lost during placement.
Adding a waste factor provides additional concrete beyond the theoretical requirement.
The calculator starts at 10%, but this value can be changed. For example, if a project theoretically needs 3 cubic yards, a 10% waste factor gives:
3 × 1.10 = 3.3 cubic yards
There is no single waste percentage suitable for every project. Site conditions, measurement accuracy, project complexity, and supplier practices should be considered when deciding how much concrete to order.

For 60 lb bags, this calculator uses approximately 60 bags per cubic yard.
If the waste-adjusted concrete requirement is 0.5 cubic yards:
0.5 × 60 = 30 bags
Bagged concrete can be convenient for smaller pours, repairs, and locations where truck access is difficult. For a large project, however, mixing many individual bags can require significant time and labor.

How to Estimate Concrete Cost
The calculator can also function as a concrete cost estimator. Enter the price your supplier charges per cubic yard, and the tool multiplies it by the waste-adjusted volume.
For example, suppose you need 4.4 cubic yards including waste and concrete costs $175 per cubic yard:
4.4 × $175 = $770
The estimated concrete material cost is $770.
This should not necessarily be treated as your complete project or delivery cost. Concrete suppliers can have additional charges for delivery, small orders, fuel, waiting time, specialty mixes, pumping, taxes, and other services.

Why Concrete Thickness Is Important
Thickness directly affects concrete volume. A small error in thickness can make a significant difference when the project covers a large area.
Consider the same slab poured at 4 inches and 6 inches. The 6-inch slab requires 50% more volume than the 4-inch slab because:
6 ÷ 4 = 1.5
That means accurate thickness is essential for estimating materials.
The correct slab thickness depends on factors such as project purpose, soil and subbase conditions, expected loads, reinforcement, engineering requirements, and local codes. A concrete quantity calculator estimates material for the thickness you provide; it does not determine the proper structural thickness.
Tips for a More Accurate Concrete Estimate
Carefully measure the actual work area rather than relying only on approximate dimensions. Check an excavation at several points because depth may vary.
