How to Calculate Cubic Yards of Concrete

Area = Length × Width

For example, a 10-foot by 20-foot slab has an area of 200 square feet.

Next, convert the thickness from inches into feet:

Thickness in feet = Thickness in inches ÷ 12

A 4-inch thickness is therefore:

4 ÷ 12 = 0.3333 feet

Multiply the area by the thickness in feet to find cubic feet:

Cubic Feet = Area × Thickness in Feet

Finally, convert cubic feet to cubic yards. Since one cubic yard contains 27 cubic feet:

Cubic Yards = Cubic Feet ÷ 27

Suppose you are planning a rectangular patio that measures 20 feet long and 15 feet wide with a thickness of 4 inches.

Rectangle and Square Concrete Calculator

The Rectangle/Square option is suitable for many standard projects, including patios, sidewalks, garage slabs, floors, rectangular driveway sections, shed bases, equipment pads, and other flat surfaces.

The calculation uses:

Area = Length × Width

For a square area, enter the same measurement as both length and width.

For example, a 12-foot by 12-foot square slab has an area of 144 square feet. The amount of concrete needed then depends on the slab thickness.

If your project consists of multiple rectangles, calculate each part separately and add the cubic-yard requirements.

Circular Concrete Calculator

Select Circle to calculate concrete for a circular pad or round slab. Enter the diameter as the Length.

The calculator divides the diameter by two to determine the radius:

Radius = Diameter ÷ 2

It then calculates area as:

Area = π × Radius²

For example, a 10-foot diameter slab has a radius of 5 feet. Its area is approximately:

The formula is:

Why Add a Waste Factor to Concrete?

Mathematical volume calculations assume that the prepared space exactly matches the dimensions entered. Actual construction sites are rarely that precise.

An excavation may be deeper in some places, the subbase can be uneven, form dimensions can vary slightly, and some material may be lost during transportation or placement.

A waste factor gives you an additional quantity beyond the theoretical calculation.

For example, if a project requires 5 cubic yards and you select a 10% waste allowance:

5 × 1.10 = 5.5 cubic yards

How to Estimate Concrete Cost

Enter your local concrete price into the Price per Cubic Yard field. The calculator applies that price to the waste-adjusted quantity.

The formula is:

Total Cost = Cubic Yards With Waste × Price per Cubic Yard

For example, 6 cubic yards at $170 per cubic yard would give:

6 × $170 = $1,020

Keep in mind that this represents the estimated concrete cost based on the price entered. It does not independently add delivery charges, short-load fees, fuel charges, pumping, taxes, waiting-time fees, or other supplier expenses.

How Thickness Changes Concrete Requirements

Thickness has a direct effect on concrete volume. Increasing thickness without changing the surface area increases the amount of concrete proportionally.
