How Does the Concrete Calculator Work?

The basic concrete calculation converts the project dimensions into volume. Since ready-mix concrete is commonly measured in cubic yards, the calculated cubic-foot volume must be converted into cubic yards.

For a rectangle or square, surface area is:

Area = Length × Width

Thickness is entered in inches, so it is converted into feet:

Thickness in feet = Thickness in inches ÷ 12

The concrete volume is then:

Cubic feet = Area × Thickness in feet

There are 27 cubic feet in one cubic yard. Therefore:

Cubic yards = Cubic feet ÷ 27

Concrete Calculator Example

Suppose you want to construct a rectangular concrete patio that is 16 feet long, 12 feet wide, and 4 inches thick.

Circular Concrete Calculator

12 ÷ 2 = 6 feet

The area of the circle is:

π × 6² ≈ 113.10 square feet

Triangle Concrete Calculator

Select Triangle when the concrete area has a triangular shape. The calculator uses Length as the base and Width as the perpendicular height.

Triangular area is:

Area = (Length × Width) ÷ 2

For example, a triangle with a base of 15 feet and a perpendicular height of 8 feet has an area of:

(15 × 8) ÷ 2 = 60 square feet

Make sure the width measurement represents the perpendicular height of the triangle rather than a sloped side.

What Is a Concrete Waste Factor?

The waste factor adds extra concrete above the theoretical volume calculated from the project's dimensions.

For example, if the calculated quantity including waste is 0.4 cubic yards:

0.4 × 45 = 18 bags

Bagged concrete is often useful for smaller projects where arranging ready-mix delivery may not be practical.

Actual yields vary between manufacturers and products. Always check the yield information printed on your selected concrete mix before deciding how many bags to purchase.

How to Estimate Concrete Cost

The Price per Cubic Yard field allows you to estimate the cost of the calculated concrete.

The formula used is:

Estimated Cost = Cubic Yards Including Waste × Price per Cubic Yard

For example, if your project requires 5.5 cubic yards including waste and the price is $170 per cubic yard:

5.5 × $170 = $935

Your estimated concrete material cost is $935.

However, this figure should not automatically be considered the final project or delivery cost. Suppliers can charge for delivery, short loads, fuel, waiting time, specialty mixes, taxes, pumping, or other services.

A 200-square-foot slab does not contain a fixed amount of concrete because the required volume depends on thickness. A 200-square-foot slab at 6 inches thick needs more concrete than the same area at 4 inches thick.

That is why this calculator asks for length, width, and thickness.

When Should You Use Ready-Mix or Bagged Concrete?
